A Malaysian Hindu devotee is being pierced on her tougue before her pilgrimage to the sacred Batu Caves temple during Thaipusam in Kuala Lumpur January 30, 2010. Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated by the Tamil community worldwide on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai. The festival commemorates the birthday of Lord Murugan, the youngest son of Shiva and Parvati, and the occasion when Murugan was given a vel (lance) by Parvati to vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman. Hindu community comprises over eight percent of Malaysia’s 28 million populations.

I crossed the border into Haiti from the Dominican Republic 36 hours after the earthquake hit. As we drove closer to Port-au-Prince, we began to see scenes of destruction and suffering, which only multiplied as we entered the city covered in smoke and in shock.
